ABSTRACT

Aims Opiate addiction is a chronic illness associated with depression. Since the prevalence of depression among addicts causes more drug use and makes drug rehabilitation treatment more difficult, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of psychodrama on the treatment of depression in improved addicts.
Materials & Methods The present study is a semi-experimental model with pretest and post-test design and control group. The statistical population consisted of improved addicts from Shiraz city who referred to Partou center. From the 60 people who had successfully detoxified by the specialist physician and scored the highest on the Beck Depression Inventory, 30 were selected and assigned to experimental and control groups. In the experimental group, 15 patients received psychodrama treatment for 12 sessions and the control group received no treatment. After the intervention, the two groups again responded to Beck Depression Inventory and data were analyzed using SPSS-20 software and statistical method of analysis of covariance. Differences were considered significant at p<0.05.
Findings The results of this study showed that psychodrama treatment significantly reduces the level of depression and emotional, cognitive, and physical symptoms of depression at the level of p<0.001 in improved addicts.
Conclusion The treatment of psychodrama reduces the rate of depression and its symptoms in improved addicts and is likely to prevent the recurrence of this disease.
