ABSTRACT

Aims People who are unaware of their emotions have less ability to suppress emotional excitement. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effectiveness of integration group therapy on emotional self-awareness, assertiveness and meaning of life of inmates.
Materials & Methods This semi-experimental study with pre-test and post-test design with control group was conducted among male inmates of central prison in Mashhad in 2018 and 30 subjects were selected by purposive sampling method and divided into experimental and control groups. The research tools were the life regard index, assertion inventory, emotional self-awareness scale. The experimental group received integration group therapy in 16 sessions. Data were analyzed by SPSS 21 software using analysis of covariance.
Findings There was a significant difference between experimental and control groups in terms of emotional self-awareness (F=17.35; p=0.001) and assertiveness (F=9.43; p=0.005), but there was no significant difference between experimental and control groups in terms of the meaning of life (F=2.46; p=0.12).
Conclusion Integration group therapy is able to increase the emotional self-awareness and assertiveness of inmates, but has no effect on their life regard.
