ABSTRACT

Aims Music therapy is one of the scientific methods which play a remarkable role in treating some psychological diseases e.g. depression, migraine, nervous headaches and anxiety. The present study was conducted to investigate the effect of music therapy on depression of chronic PTSD veterans.
Materials & Methods It is a semi-experimental study with pretest-posttest and control group design. The statistical population was all veterans suffering from PTSD in 2014 in Isfahan city, Iran. 60 veterans were selected through available sampling method and put randomly into experimental and control groups (30 veterans in each group). The instruments of the study included Beck's depression questionnaire which was administered in both pretest and posttest phases. The data analysis was conducted through descriptive (mean and standard deviation) and inferential (Univariate Analysis of covariance test) statistics.
Findings Music therapy intervention had a significant effect on decreasing the depression of chronic Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder veterans in post-test in experimental group (p<0.05).
Conclusion Music therapy can be used as an effective and low cost treatment for decreasing the depression of chronic post-traumatic stress disorder veterans.
