ABSTRACT
Aims
Due to its stressful nature and as well as its easy access to weapons, military environments can increase aggression or suicidal thoughts in the soldiers. Reducing such thoughts in suicidal has recently been addressed by researchers. This study was conducted with the aim of investigating the effectiveness of mindfulness-based stress reduction on suicidal thoughts and aggression in private soldiers of the Malek-e-Ashtar Arak Garrison Training Course.
Materials & Methods The research method was experimental and pre-test and post-test with control group. To do this research, 40 soldiers with high score in suicidal thoughts were randomly assigned to two experimental and control groups. Beck's suicidal thoughts scale and aggression questionnaire were used to collect information in pre-test and post-test. For the experimental group, mindfulness-based stress reduction was applied for 8 sessions. The data were analyzed by SPSS software, using covariance analysis.
Findings There was a significant relationship between the score of suicidal thoughts in pre-test and post-test (p<0.011; f=7.171). There was a significant relationship between the score of aggression in pre-test and post-test (p>0.011; f=464.429).
Conclusion Mindfulness-based stress reduction is effective in decreasing suicidal thoughts and aggression of private soldiers.
